Pennine Way in day walks

The Pennine Way

The Pennine Way was the first long distance footpath in England, and is still regarded by many long distance hikers as the king of them all. It certainly isn’t the longest – that honour belongs to the South West Coast Path – but it may well be the most challenging, and without doubt has a special place in the hearts of the hiking community.

To many people, the dream of walking the whole length of the Pennine Way will remain just that - a dream. Whether for reasons of time, finances, fitness, or that the sheer scale of the challenge is just too daunting. If you are one of these people, then this guide is for you.

On Walkingworld, a series of walks is being developed that cover almost the entire southern two thirds of the Pennine Way using mostly circular routes easily accessible by car or public transport. They were chosen, not to cover the maximum length of the Way, but as interesting and rewarding walks in their own right. They give the walker a feel not only for the remote Pennine terrain over which the way passes, but the wider locale, along with the interesting Pennine towns and villages, bypassed by the way in favour of more rugged and demanding landscapes.

So, for those who wish to get a flavour of the Pennine Way, or those who wish to walk it at a more leisurely pace over, say, a series of weekends, why not read on to see what Walkingworld can offer you.

But before you head out all guns blazing, I should add a note of caution. Pennine Way terrain can be a dangerous place for the inexperienced. The weather can be unpredictable, even on warm summer’s days. Mud and bog is a year round problem even after prolonged dry spells. So go prepared, and take note of the following:

* None of these walks should be attempted in anything other than good, waterproof walking boots.
* Always pack waterproofs, a hat, gloves and a fleece/jumper, even on a hot, dry day.
* The maps on Walkingworld are good, but should not be used as a substitute for the full map (preferably 1:25000) and a compass - and these are of little value if you don’t know how to use them.
* Take sufficient water (on a hot day, one litre isn’t enough – drink regularly to avoid dehydration) and food. A bar of Kendal mint cake is ideal to keep in your rucksack as a permanent emergency supply of sugars.
* Tell someone where you’re going (why not leave them a copy of the Walkingworld walking instructions and map?) and what to do if you do not return by a given time. Tell them that if Mountain Rescue Teams are needed, they should call 999.
* Always carry a whistle. Three short sharp, blasts mean you are in trouble and need help.

But please don’t let the above put you off. The walks are designed for you to enjoy, and I’m sure you will.
