Getting out this winter
This month's newsletter features some tempting holidays abroad, from the Spanish Alpujarras to the Slovenian Alps and on the Algarve in Portugal. If you're lucky enough to be contemplating a walking holiday abroad in 2018 there's certainly plenty of choice.

In the meantime some great late autumn and winter walking in Great Britain beckons. The Walkingworld app is now fully released in both the Android Play Store and the Apple App Store (search for 'Walkingworld'). It should make navigating the walks much easier, with the waymarks and your GPS position displayed on OS maps. Installing the app is free but you need to upgrade to get the more detailed OS 1:25,000 Explorer maps which are the 'gold standard' for walking in the British Isles.

In September we went on a break in one of HF Holidays' country house hotels, to savour some British walking with a touch of luxury. This was, without doubt, a far cry from the camping weekends in Snowdonia we have had in the past. Read our review of our stay at Craflwyn Hall, a Victorian gentleman's hunting lodge near Beddgelert, in the shadow of Snowdon. This is living in the manner to which we would like to become accustomed... you might fancy it too.

The 'Secret' Algarve
Think Algarve and the first images that spring to mind may not be of tranquil woodlands, carpeted in orange groves, eucalyptus trees and cork oak, or vast expanses of unspoiled and uncrowded golden sands. Yet, for those who know where to look, Portugal’s sunshine region has a secret side that is a world away from the well-known tourist haunts.

Self-guided walking specialists Inntravel offer you the chance to discover the authentic Algarve throughout the 'off season', when the sunshine is still plentiful and the skies a crisp, deep blue. An ideal blend of wonderfully varied walking, spectacular scenery and generous hospitality, this holiday is based at a converted 19th-century quinta (farmhouse), tucked away in timeless countryside surrounding the historic harbour town of Lagos.

With the freedom a hire car brings, you can choose between a wide range of walking and sightseeing options - following dramatic coastal paths to discover pretty fishing villages and ancient forts, heading inland through beautiful wooded valleys, visiting the very edge of Europe at windswept Cape St. Vincent and exploring historic Silves.

Or, like a recent customer, you may struggle to tear yourself away from the quinta and your delightful hosts, Jill & Julio Pires: "The holiday could not be bettered. The Quinta was amazing and our hosts were superb - friendly, welcoming, informative and good fun. One of our best holidays".

Exploring the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada
Writer Chris Stewart, author of best-selling 'Driving over Lemons', is leading four weeks of walking holidays in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada in 2018. Walking between four and six hours a day, Chris will introduce you to the spectacular Poqueira and Trevelez river gorges; the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada; forgotten villages in the southern Alpujarras; and the ancient terraced meadows with their olive, almond and chestnut groves. Highlights include a gorge walk to Chris’ farm for a long, lazy lunch on the terrace and a day in Granada exploring the Moorish city with its palaces, caravanserai and ancient silk market.

The holidays are based at Casa Ana in the tiny, unspoilt village of Ferreirola, whose owner Anne is herself a keen walker. You’ll experience stylish accommodation in a 400-year old Moorish-style house with hearty breakfasts and Casa Ana’s famous dinners. After an exhilarating day’s walking there are peaceful terraces where you can relax with a cold beer and gaze at the stunning views.

If you’re interested in the flora and fauna of the Alpujarras, 'Walking with Nature' takes you on beautiful walks along river banks and through high mountain ('borreguiles') terrain, gentle pastures and coastal wetlands, ensuring that you see large numbers of birds, wildflowers and butterflies.

Groups are small - usually only 14 - so early booking is recommended. Find out more on the Casa Ana website or contact Anne at info@casa-ana.com
