Lots of options for 2017
January is the time when we look forward to the new walking seasons and perhaps think of the holidays we’ll be taking in the spring, summer or autumn. Here at Walkingworld, though, we also look back. It’s the time when we go through the records of all the walks printed out and downloaded to mobile phones, add them all up and share out royalties to our loyal bunch of walk contributors. Contributors to Walkingworld share a quarter of our revenues, shared out according to the number of times their walks have been accessed.
It’s always interesting to see which walks have come out top. Some of the classic hill routes, to the summit of Snowdon for instance, are unsurprisingly popular. But then there is a broad collection of country walks, between five and eight miles and mostly incorporating a pub, which rise to the top of the list. No great surprise, perhaps!
For those who are planning holidays abroad or short breaks at home, we’ve got some great options to explore in this newsletter. We’ll be hearing more from HF Holidays throughout the year, and our old friends Inntravel will be back next month. Finally, for those who have been waiting patiently for a dedicated Walkingworld app, it’s due for release in the spring in Android and iOS formats.
Montane Medusa 32L rucksack on sale
We wouldn’t normally recommend buying a top of the range mountaineering rucksack just for a day’s walking, but they do have a lot of advantages. Plus this one’s available at a really attractive price of £50 from our local outdoor specialist in Kirkby Stephen, Mad About Mountains, who have a batch of them reduced from the normal £85.
We regularly use rucksacks like this in the hills because they are a little larger than the usual 25 litre day sack and are capable of holding gear like ice axes and crampons safely. One of the noticeable benefits of a mountaineering sack is that there are fewer external straps and they are kept tidied away, so you don’t have them hitting you in the face in windy weather.
The Montane Medusa 32L sack is really designed for alpine ascents but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have the same advanced features for a day out in the British countryside. There are two zip pockets in the lid, elasticated outer sleeves for drinks bottles, a moulded back system (with two length options) that is light but very comfortable, and a simple method for opening and closing the main compartment. The ice tool attachment system works equally well for walking poles. And if you are carrying less you just compress the sack into a smaller size with the compression straps. It’s also nice and tough. The £50 price includes delivery to mainland UK, so it’s a bit of a bargain. Find out more

New ways to explore the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada
The wild and beautiful Sierra Nevada National Park in Spain, including its southern slopes, the Alpujarra, is a perfect walking holiday destination. There’s a great variety of walks, from high mountain hikes, to gentler routes through orchards and white villages. Casa Ana is a gem of a guest house in the village of Ferreirola, owned and run by keen walkers. Two new holidays are on the menu this year.
‘Walking and Nature’ explores a landscape fantastically rich in wildlife, thanks in large part to the altitude range from the lower market towns at 500m to the summits at nearly 3500m. Expert guides take you on five days walking to see the wonders of the mountain and valley wildlife, including eagles, vultures, ibex, and many of the endemic bird, wildflower and butterfly species.
‘Walking with a Camera’ offers the opportunity to discover the rugged beauty of the Spanish Sierra Nevada through a lens. Highlights include learning how to shoot big landscapes whilst exploring the ancient Moorish footpaths, mule tracks and silk routes; a day exploring medieval Islamic architecture in the city of Granada; and discovering the secrets of successful sunrise and sunset photography in the mountains.
For further details contact Anne Hunt at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the Casa Ana website.

Events and volunteering
The Ride2stride Settle-Carlisle Railway Walking Festival (25 April to 1 May 2017) is a week long programme of walks, talks and music along this ever popular and spectacular line. The railway is currently undergoing repairs but is due to fully re-open on 31st March 2017. You might consider basing yourself in our home town of Kirkby Stephen, which lies on the line roughly half way between Settle and Carlisle. There are a number of walks in the Festival programme in this Walkers are Welcome town, and or you could travel to a new station every day as the walks are timed to coincide with train arrival times.
The Pennine Way People Project is looking for volunteers on one of the northern stretches of the well known national trail. The Pennine Way National Trail attracts thousands of walkers every year and when combined with temperamental weather conditions the trail can become a victim of its own success, with the ground underfoot becoming boggy and eroded. Volunteers with a passion for the countryside and a sense of place are being sought to help look after it. As well as practical work parties including footpath repairs and waymarking, volunteers can apply to be allocated a specific stretch of the route to look after as its ‘Champion’.
Members can again enjoy an exclusive discount on the independent walking package offered by Richard and Alex Johnson in the Lot, France. This year will be the final one as after 12 years they will be hanging up their walking boots. So if you would like to explore some of the most beautiful countryside and villages in southwest France with their series of self-led walks this is the time to do it. The holiday includes 7 nights B&B and 6 four course evening meals using fresh local ingredients at their award winning guesthouse. Normally 450 euros p.p., Walkingworld members qualify for a reduced price of 420 euros if booked before the end of April. Please mention 'WW offer 2016'. Prices based on two sharing a double room. www.jardin-segala.com
